Quod dixi, dixi…

Een paar jaar geleden kocht ik een boek. Een passage is me sindsdien altijd bijgebleven, meer omwille van de droogheid waarmee de gebeurtenis beschreven wordt dan omwille van de tekst. En in’t huidige klimaat lijkt deze passage weer bijzonder actueel te worden, wetende dat ze meer dan 650 geleden werd neergepend.

In Kilkenny in Ireland the Franciscan monk John Clynn set down the horrors he had seen and then, as of measuring his shroud at the end of the world, wrote: “Seeing these many ills and that whole world is encompassed by evil, waiting among the dead for death to come, I have committed to writing what I have truly heard… and so that the writing does not perish with the writer or the work fail with the workman I leave parchment for continuing it in case anyone should be alive in the future”. At which a second hand writes: “Here it seems, the author died.” (Simon Schama, A history of Britain).
